CW Docs Are Cooking at Bogart Farmers Market

Starting June 1 Drs. Tanda Cook and Sarah Marshall will be doing cooking demonstrations, with delicious free samples, Tuesday nights from 5-8pm at the Bogert Farmers Market, 325 S Church Ave Bozeman, Montana 59715. We will be preparing delicious samples of sustainably, organically, locally raised meat and produce.  Our goal is to educate Bozeman on the health benefits of eating local in a way they can taste the difference!

If you are in town, come by for a taste and we will send you home with the recipe. If your legs don’t stretch to Montana give us a call to learn how to get started, or increase your commitment, to eating local, sustainable foods.

Paying it Forward

This month we are setting aside our usual  newsletter to request assistance from our supportive community in a cause that is near to our hearts.  Next month Dr. Marshall will be headed to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, to participate in a woman’s circle retreat.  While there, she will be volunteering her medical skills to the local indigenous population to contribute to the diagnoses and treatment of the local Diabetes epidemic.

What is Being Done

Last July Karen Rosenberg, LISW and Ceci McDonnell, LISW, the organizers of the retreat, were able to bring down 20 glucose monitoring devices that a woman from the retreat’s brother donated.  Another woman from the circle, a diabetes educator/faculty, was able to donate test strips.  They had a diabetes education session in La Gloria, at the co-op store and taught everyone there how to use the glucometers.

Until last year no one on the island was tested more than once a year, if at all. To be tested not only meant being able to afford to see a doctor but to be able to afford the trip to the mainland as well.  Last year, for the first time, glucometers were sprinkled in La Gloria and some folks are now self-monitoring!  It’s an awesome start, yet so much more needs to be done.  Lupe, a local resident who helped organize the donations, has let us know they are running out of strips and more glucometers would be a huge help.

Test strips cost about $1 each and as physicians we frequently ask our American patients to monitor their blood levels up to 6 times a day.  The average salary on Isla Mujeres is $5 a day making test strips an impossibility to purchase.

Support Our Vision

We have a vision at Clearwater to have so many supplies to bring down that we can hardly pass through customs! Our goal is to raise $2000 to be able to purchase much needed glucose monitoring supplies and empower the residents of Isla in their health and well-being.  Help us reach our goal and donate whatever you are able today.
