How to Create a Mustard Plaster
Learn about the benefits of a mustard plaster here.
1. Stir dry mustard and flour together as follows:
Adult: 1 Tbsp mustard, 4 Tbsp flour
Child: 1 Tbsp mustard, 8 Tbsp flour
Infant: 1 Tbsp mustard, 12 Tbsp flour
Add enough tepid water to make a paste thin enough to spread, but not so thin it will run.
2. Spread the paste on a 4 x 4 of gauze or on one side of a paper towel. Sandwich the paste between two layers of gauze or paper towel. The paste should not come in direct contact with skin.
3. After the poultice has been put in place, cover with a towel to protect clothes.
4. Leave the plaster in place for 10 to 20 minutes, then remove and discard.
5. Always check 5 minutes into treatment to make sure the plaster is not burning the patient. If the patient complains of stinging and/or burning, or if the skin becomes well reddened before the time is up, remove the plaster.
6. Clean the area well after the treatment.
