Tomas’s Bio
Tomas struggled with ulcerative colitis in his early life until his mid-twenties when he had an operation to remove his colon. He subsequentially went for two more operations to build an internal “J-pouch” fashioned from his small intestine and has live with the pouch all his adult life. Though the operations essentially “cured” him of the ulcerative colitis, his journey to heal his underlying psychological issues have been tougher than any physical issues. Overcoming depression and the internal lack of self-worth rooted in childhood trauma has led him to find deep mental and spiritual healing.
Tomas is currently the Component Integration and Test Lead Engineer for the primary mirror control system of the Giant Magellan Telescope project. He previously worked as a Control Systems Lead Engineer at the Keck Observatory on the Big Island of Hawaii. He has served in the Army National Guard as a Helicopter crew chief and lived overseas working as a defense contractor for many years. He is the cofounder and officer on the board of Oceanic Research Group – an educational film making company that specializes in ocean ecosystems.
Tomas graduated from the University of Buffalo (B.S., Electrical Engineering), Worcester Polytech Institute (M.S, Electrical Engineering), and University of New Hampshire (M.S. Ocean Engineering). In addition to working in the Defense and Astronomy industries, Tomas has taught and mentored students from middle school to college level in math and science throughout his career and has published several peer reviewed scientific papers in the SPIE proceedings.
